Cambridge University Estates Division is looking to recruit an Electrician to join their busy Maintenance team. The Maintenance Section is responsible for maintaining the operational estate as well as carrying out minor refurbishments, alterations, and PPM.



The successful candidate will ensure that building services are maintained to a high standard of safety and comply with current regulations. Working under the supervision of the Electrical Supervisor, the role holder will be required to assist with and complete maintenance, installation, and servicing work on all building services across the University Estate. May be required to work alongside external contractors.



Key Responsibilities & Benefits



Breakdowns and Preventative Maintenance



Attends site to investigate reported operational problems on services and plant, and carries out routine maintenance in accordance with pre-set work instructions, the preparation of which he has been party to, taking the following action:




    • Receives direct telephone communications during the workday from the Electrical Supervisor in relation to emergencies requiring you to then liaise with personnel regarding faults.

    • Assesses problems, diagnoses faults, test running the plant if necessary. Inspects/services plant in accordance with Maintenance Unit/ manufacturer's instructions.

    • Reports to Departmental/Building staff on completion of each job as required, particularly in respect to follow-up observations/action that may be necessary. This communication is made easier using the handheld device.



In the event of additional support being required (e.g. other trade skill, specialist technical backup or manufacturer's opinion) the role-holder you would inform the Electrical Supervisor.



Installation Work



Installs electrical services plant in accordance with written technical instructions (drawings, etc.) or verbal instructions, taking the following action:




    • Liaises with all relevant parties accordingly.

    • Assesses installation requirements on site determining materials, other trade skills required builders' work and anticipated time schedule. Liaising with the Electrical Supervisor.

    • Checks all relevant documentation, particularly manufacturers' instructions in respect to the installation element of services plant involved.

    • On completion carry out Test and Inspection in accordance with IEE Wiring Regulations.

    • For administrative purposes all job details will be entered onto a handheld device including a brief outline report of work done, follow-up action required, materials used, and time spent on job.



Again, in the event of additional support being required (e.g. other trade skills, specialist technical backup or manufacturer's opinion) the role-holder you would inform the Electrical Supervisor.




Experience/Qualifications




    • Machine Shop - You will be familiar with the operation of and is able to use basic electrical and mechanical machine shop equipment (test bench, lathes, millers, etc.)

    • Candidates are required to be qualified to NVQ level 3 and will have completed a recognised electrical apprenticeship. City and Guilds 2391 Inspection testing and verification of circuits would be desirable.

    • A current full Driving Licence would be an advantage.



The successful candidate may be required to be available on a rota basis for out of hours or standby duties.



Car Parking: The parking is FREE. It is about a 7-minute walk. It is secure parking with a barrier and CCTV.


Hours: Monday - Friday 36.5 hours per week. (Emergency call out Rota


for out of hours). In addition to the standard working week of 36.5 you will work 0.5 hours. As a result of working this extra time, in addition to the 36 days holiday entitlement, you will receive time off in lieu with payment equivalent to a further 3 working days in a full leave year
